Specialty Food Shops:
Just because one is in the city, it does not mean one has to shop at a super-market. The above map illustrates some of the wonderful specialty food shops in the area that have made Greenwich Village and Soho one of the most famous places to shop for gourmet foods. Indicated above, and described below, are a selection of some of the best places for getting specialty foods, whether they are cheeses from around the world, meats from local butchers, or wines from nearby vineyards.

1. Amy's Breads, 250 Bleecker Street, corner of Leroy Street
Amy's Breads on Bleecker Street is the local outpost of the Chelsea Market bakery of fine breads, cakes, and other scrumptious baked goods. It is also a personal favorite for the morning coffee. Coffee and Breakfast specials include the "Parissian", a European style bowl of coffee with a baguette and butter or jams, it doesn't get any better.

2. The Lobster Place, 252 Bleecker Street, near Leroy Street
The Lobster Place provides the West Village with some of the freshest seafood available. The helpful staff also provides suggestions and recommendations for preparations, portion sizes, and cooking times. But what is also great about this fish store, is they have a good selection of pre-prepared fish, that one only has to put in the oven or in the pan, for the time indicated on the label. Fresh fish, without the hassle, and great sushi as well.

3. Murray's Cheese Shop, 254 Bleecker Street, near Cornelia Street
Cheese, cheese, and a lot more cheese. One can taste a selection of some of the best cheeses from around the world in this fine food establishment, which is almost required considering the staggering amount of cheeses to choose from. While you are there you can also pick up some prosciutto and crackers, and then all you'll need is a bottle of wine for a great evening. Keep in mind they also have some great sandwiches for the bag lunch or pick nick.

4. Faicco's Pork Store, 260 Bleecker Street, near Cornelia Street
If homemade sausage is your thing, this is where you'll find some of the best in the city. People travel from far and wide, to select the spicy, the sweat, and all those in between, for the mid-summer bar-b-que to die for.

5. Ottomanelli's Meat Market, 285 Bleecker Street, near 7th Avenue
Fresh cut meats and a true sense of Village history. History, in the sense of how food shopping should be, friendly neighborhood butchers providing not just meat, but conversation and a true sense of place. But the meat is why people have been coming for so long. Wonderful cuts of just about every type of meat. Just order in advance, and get on line early, if the holidays are approaching.

6. Vintage New York, 482 Broome Street, entry at corner of Wooster Street
Alas with the changing scVintage New York features the finest wines from New York State. The wines are from the four largest appellations including Long Island, the finger lakes, the Hudson Valley, and Lake Erie. Along with a wonderful selection of wines, they offer wine seminars where one can learn about local wines from the vintners who make them, while tasting foods prepared by local chefs matched to the wines being discussed. (Unfortuneatly Vintage NY recently closed)

7. Vesuvio Bakery, 160 Prince Street
Another of the great SoHo bakeries. Although the ownership changed recently, it still provides some of the best Italian baked goods south of Houston.

8. Joe's Dairy, 156 Sullivan Street
Joe' Dairy provides some of the best hand made mozzarella in New York City. Run by the same man for the last twenty five years, who took over the business from Joe Aiello, it's a storefront that takes one back to the way the village was in years past. A step inside, and one realizes that the past is not that distant.

9. Pino's Meat Market, 149 Sullivan Street
Some of the best home-made hotdogs and sausages on the planet. It is said, once you have a hotdog from this establishment you can never eat a factory manufactured hotdog ever again. Definitely worth trying.

10. Raffetto's, 144 West Houston Street
Pasta, wonderful pasta! There are not too many places where you can select the type of dough, choose your favorite stuffing, and then watch your personalized hand made raviolis produced right in front of your eyes, but this is one of the best. Select your favorite sauce, or just go with some olive oil and salt, and the pasta lover in you will never be happier.

11. Florence Prime Meat Market, 5 Jones Street
Another fantastic place in the West Village for fresh meat. Fresh cuts of meat, chicken, and home made sausage are just some of the highlights of this local butcher shop.

12. Magnolia Bakery, 401 Bleecker Street
Magnolia Bakery is famous for one thing. Cupcakes. First made famous by Carrie Bradshaw enjoying cupcakes from this establishment in the Sex and the City show on HBO, it never lost ground since. People start to line up shortly before the doors open, and the line grows longer throughout the day. To hint at how popular the cupcakes are, there's a four cupcake limit per person. Crazy.

13. Jaques Torres Chocolate, 350 Hudson Street, at the corner of King Street
Known for some of the best chocolates around, a visit to this manhattan chocolate factory is a must for the chocolate lover.
